Emmett Payopa Coker

The United Methodist University proudly celebrates Mr. Emmett P. Coker, a distinguished alumnus whose journey represents academic excellence, professional achievement, community leadership, and dedicated service to his alma mater.

Mr. Coker earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration and Sociology from the United Methodist University. During his undergraduate years, he distinguished himself as a work-study student, Captain and Coach of the UMU Debate Team, and Secretary General of the 14th Graduating Class. These early leadership experiences strengthened his commitment to service, institutional development, and youth empowerment.

Determined to expand his academic and professional competence, he subsequently earned a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from Near East University, graduating as the top student in his department. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy from the Gabriel L. Dennis Foreign Service Institute of Liberia and professional training in Multimedia Forensics from the National Forensic Sciences University in India.

Today, Mr. Coker serves as Director of Media and Communications at the National Road Fund of Liberia. In this capacity, he leads the institution’s media strategy, public information campaigns, digital communications, press relations, radio and television engagements, stakeholder outreach, and corporate publications. His work helps translate complex matters of road financing, accountability, and infrastructure development into accessible information for the Liberian public.

Since 2022, he has also served as an adjunct lecturer at the United Methodist University, teaching courses in Rural Development and Government Budgeting. Through this role, he connects academic theory with practical public-sector experience and contributes directly to preparing the next generation of public administrators and development professionals.

On February 28, 2026, Mr. Coker was elected President of the United Methodist University Alumni Association and was formally inducted on April 24, 2026. His election reflected the confidence of alumni in his leadership, vision, and commitment to institutional advancement.

As President, he has championed the construction of a 16-classroom facility to support the University’s expansion and relocation plans. His administration is also pursuing the modernization of the University library, improved internet connectivity, technology-equipped classrooms, scholarship opportunities, a student cafeteria, and a comprehensive alumni database.

Beyond his professional and academic responsibilities, Mr. Coker has a strong record of community service. As Youth Chairman of Gaye Town Community, he mobilized young people, promoted peaceful dialogue, and supported community awareness during Liberia’s Ebola crisis.

His story is one of determination, service, and purposeful return: UMU helped shape his future, and he has returned to help shape the future of UMU.
